Things to do on Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island is a granite continental island 29 kilometres off Cairns, about 45 minutes by fast catamaran, and it feels different from the flat coral cays further offshore.

Walking trails climb through rainforest to the old lighthouse and the Summit Track lookout, the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre works with injured turtles year-round, and Nudey Beach is worth the short walk down from the resort.

Its sand is actually coral debris rather than true sand, coarser underfoot than a mainland beach. Day trip transfers run roughly 80 to 100 Australian dollars return, and the island's terrain suits walkers more than toddlers or nervous swimmers.
